Women Lawyers of Sacramento has signed on to an amicus curiae brief filed by the National Women’s Law Center in the Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd., et al. vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, et al. case pending in the Supreme Court of the United States. The case involves a baker who refused to make a cake for a gay couple. The implications of the case are much broader, however, as many amicus briefs have been filed in the matter, some of which seek to argue that having “heartfelt religious beliefs” to be grounds for objecting not only to discrimination laws involving LGBT persons, but more broadly to many other types of civil rights, including public accommodations laws and other rights applicable to women and other protected classes. Other amici curiae include the California Women Lawyers, Lawyers Club of San Diego, and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. To read the entire brief click here.
